'Educate' to protect against online fraud
06 March 2008
With more than 15 million Britons now regularly using the internet to access their bank accounts, UK consumers need to be more educated about online security to prevent fraud.
The call comes as eWise releases a new online payment system which eliminates the requirement for customers to hand over their credit card details directly to the online retailer, instead redirecting customers to their bank's website to complete the transaction.
Mark Matthews, UK managing director of eWise, says that consumers need to be educated to limit the risk of online fraud and take steps to protect themselves.
"Instead of entering your card details, we are alleviating that risk for the consumer
.They don't enter their card details online [and] the merchant doesn't hold any financial information about the consumer," he added.
Research released by APACS, the UK payments association, showed earlier this month that one in eight shoppers failed to logout after completing a transaction and 25 percent of shoppers do not check if a website has a secure payment system.
