Brits 'still struggling to save'
28 March 2008
New research has revealed that 4.8 million UK adults cannot afford to put any money aside for savings.
Figures compiled by the Post Office show that an increase in the amount people are spending on their day-to-day needs is putting saving money on the back burner.
Rises in living costs such as utilities and council tax has seen the monthly outgoings of many homeowners increase considerably.
Richard Norman, director of savings at the Post Office, said: "Our research shows that millions of people are missing out on earning interest on their savings and have to live without the security of having a 'savings safety net' if they ever found themselves in financial trouble.
"In times of economic uncertainty, it's more important than ever to try and put money away. Our advice is try and keep saving regularly, even if it's just a small amount, and consider saving less frequently such as every other month."
Savers are being urged to top up their Isas with their annual allowance before the end of next week when the tax year comes to an end.
