Holidaymakers told to pay it safe

07 May 2008

People travelling abroad this summer should avoid risk and book through a tour company, a travel association has claimed.

By organising a holiday themselves, travellers could not have the appropriate cover if anything went wrong says the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO).

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, up to 20 million tourists on a "do-it-yourself" holiday could be at financial risk this summer.

A spokesperson for AITO, said: "Always book with a tour operator because you're spending quite a considerable amount of money and rather than saving one or two hundred pounds, why risk it if something goes wrong?"

By not having the safety net of a tour operator, tourists could be stranded abroad if a company they booked with went out of business.

"A lot of people are tempted to package their holiday out - buy their flights, accommodation and car hire and do it all themselves and it’s essentially a bit of a false economy," said a spokesperson for AITO.ADNFCR-1395-ID-18582158-ADNFCR
