Net tightens on uninsured drivers
12 September 2008
Motorists may see savings on their car insurance premiums after the minister of transport confirmed new measures to deal with uninsured drivers, according to the British Insurance Brokers Association (BIBA).
Graeme Trudgill, the technical and corporate affairs executive at BIBA, said that the government will issue a consultation document in the next few months outlining new measures that tackle uninsured driving.
"The government have committed and said that, so it is great news in the fight against uninsured driving," he said.
Two databases - one with a list of registered car owners and one with a list of insurance policies - will be compared to find car insurance evaders.
"Basically you're not going to get away with driving uninsured anymore. The computer databases will all compare [information], you'll be highlighted, you'll be sent letters and the process will take it forward," he added.
According to Direct Line, accidents involving uninsured drivers kill around 200 road users each year.
