Motorists ignorant to the dangers of uninsured driving
18 September 2008
Many motorists do not understand the severity of driving a vehicle without car insurance, it has been stated.
Lorraine Preston, communications assistant at the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), said that her company will work closely with the government and the police to change the attitudes of motorists who are ignorant to the consequences.
She said: "Some people don't see uninsured driving for the crime that it is, and the police and the MIB along with government are determined to change both the perceptions and behaviour of the uninsured."
Statistics released earlier this month by the MIB showed that there are around two million drivers on Britain's roads who fail to have car insurance, with areas in the west Midlands proving to be among the worst.
Ms Preston added that the police will use automatic number plate recognition technology to track down those without car insurance.
Research by Direct Line revealed that of the 1.5 million uninsured drivers on our roads, only 260,000 are convicted each year.
