Holidaymakers urged to get terrorism protection
11 September 2008
With today being the seventh anniversary of the World Trade Centre attacks, tourists are being told to check if their travel insurance includes protection against terrorism.
In a survey of 976 annual and single trips, research by Defaqto revealed that only 63 per cent of travel insurance policies available offer some form of protection following a terrorist incident.
Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, said: "This leaves a significant proportion of people who are at risk from purchasing inadequate cover."
According to Mr Powell, while most travel insurance providers would probably pay medical claims resulting from terrorism, tourists could lose out in the case of baggage and personal accident claims.
"You should check with your insurer to confirm the cover provided, particularly if you are travelling to countries at risk of terrorism," he added.
According to the Aviation Trends report by the Civil Aviation Authority, passenger numbers to North America and the rest of the world have risen by four per cent in the last year.
