Car insurance could be hit by flooding
12 September 2008
A new study has found that motorists in flood risk areas could be unable to claim on their car insurance if their vehicle is damaged.
Research by uSwitch.com revealed that one in four motorists living in flood risk areas fail to have comprehensive insurance and therefore may not be able to claim for the damage.
Ashton Berkhauer, insurance expert at uSwitch.com, said: "Flooding is an issue for many motorists, yet too many people are failing to learn lessons from 2007 and secure adequate cover should the worst happen."
Motorists with comprehensive insurance are advised that they could be at risk as some policies have ambiguous clauses which could cause confusion with a claim.
For example, a motorist who attempts to drive through flood water and sees their vehicle break down could invalidate their claim.
"If drivers do not insure their cars properly, they could suffer the financial consequences long after the flood waters recede," Mr Berkhauer added.
According to Direct Line, it is estimated that one in 20 drivers are uninsured.
